What is microfluidics?
Microfluidics refers to the science and technology involved in the use of microchannels (with sizes ranging from tens to hundreds of micrometers) to process or manipulate tiny fluids (with volumes ranging from nanoliters to nanoliters). This is an emerging interdisciplinary field involving chemistry, fluid physics, microelectronics, new materials, biology, and biomedical engineering.
In the contemporary field of IVD, microfluidic chips developed based on the science and technology of microfluidics integrate basic operational units such as sample preparation, reaction, separation, and detection from biological, chemical, and medical analysis processes onto a micrometer scale chip, automatically completing the entire analysis process. Microfluidic detection chips typically have advantages such as low sample consumption, high throughput, fast detection speed, easy operation, multifunctional integration, small size, and portability. The key to its widespread application lies in low-cost, large-scale forming technology and its manufacturing accuracy.
A complete IVD microfluidic system consists of three elements: reagents, chips, and instruments. The reagent system is the foundation of detection methodology, the microfluidic chip serves as the core consumable carrier for sample processing, biochemical reactions, and analytical detection, and the analytical instrument is an auxiliary tool for implementing fluid control, temperature control, and obtaining detection results. The three elements complement each other and are indispensable.
